Non-Discrimination Statement

The City of Newport (the “City”) does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin (including limited English proficiency), sex (including pregnancy), age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity (including expression), in administration of any of its programs or activities, and does not intimidate or retaliate against any individual or group because they have exercised their rights to participate in or oppose actions protected by applicable laws and regulations, or for the purpose of interfering with such rights.

The City is responsible for ensuring compliance with nondiscrimination requirements established by federal regulations, including:

  • 40 C.F.R. Parts 5 and 7 – Nondiscrimination in programs or activities receiving federal assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • 49 C.F.R. Part 21 – Nondiscrimination in federally assisted programs of the Department of Transportation, effectuating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 – Prohibiting discrimination based on disability.
  • The Age Discrimination Act of 1975 – Protecting individuals from age-based discrimination.
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 – Addressing discrimination based on sex in federally funded education programs.
  • Section 13 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 – Prohibiting discrimination under certain water pollution control programs.
  • Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 – Ensuring nondiscrimination based on disability in state and local government services.

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act

The City complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensuring equal access to its programs, services, and activities for people with disabilities. Reasonable modifications to policies and procedures are available to facilitate participation, and auxiliary aids and services are provided for effective communication. Examples include sign language interpreters, large-print documents, and Braille materials.

Requests for accommodations or modifications should be directed to the Nondiscrimination Compliance Coordinator at least two weeks in advance.
 
How to File a Complaint?
Any person who believes they have been subject to unlawful discrimination has the right to submit a written complaint or complete our Nondiscrimination Complaint Form, available in English and Spanish, within 180 calendar days of the alleged act(s) of discrimination.
