City Preparing for Coastal Storm

NEWPORT, R.I. (December 22, 2022) -- The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and Coastal Flood Warning beginning at 1 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23rd until 7 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24th.

Please be advised that this is expected to be a high-impact storm with power outages, temporary road and bridge closures, and isolated flooding all possible.

To report a power outage, please contact RI Energy at 1 800-465-1212 or 1-855-RIE-1102. If you see a downed line, dial 911 right away.

For those experiencing homelessness, or in need of access to social services, please dial 2-1-1 for additional resources.

If you lose power or heat, a list of Warming Centers can be found online at www.CityofNewport.com/WarmingCenters

The storm is expected to bring:

•  Damaging winds of up to 65 mph
•  Heavy rainfall of 2-2.5 inches
•  Minor to moderate coastal flooding Friday morning
•  Hazardous marine conditions for all waters
•  And Rapidly Falling Temperatures Friday night into Saturday

Please be advised that waves of up to 13-feet are possible along ocean facing beaches, and the gates to Easton's Beach will be closed as a result.

If you live or work in or near an area prone to flooding, please do your part to help keep stormwater flowing by making sure any nearby storm drains are free and clear of debris.

If you still have a vessel in the water, please be sure to double up on lines and reduce windage by securing any loose canvas and deck items.

Our Public Services crews will be on standby to respond to reports of fallen trees, and residents are urged to avoid downed power lines.
