Newport Launches New Application Process for Local Nonprofit Funding NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2025) –The City of Newport has announced the launch of its newly revised Community Grant Programs, including details on eligibility, the application process, and key deadlines for community-based nonprofit organizations. Applications for Fiscal Year 2027 grants are due December 5, 2025. Earlier this year, the City Council tasked the City administration with developing a centralized Community Grants Program and implementing a competitive, transparent review process for all grant requests beginning in FY27. Newport’s Community Grant Programs include:
Civic Support Grants, providing annual assistance to local nonprofits delivering vital community programs; and
Special Projects Grants, supporting initiatives that address the needs of Newport residents affected by opioid and substance use disorders
“Through these programs, the City aims to strengthen community resilience by investing in organizations that improve quality of life—particularly for low- and moderate-income residents and families,” said City Manager Colin Kennedy. “This modernized, equitable, and user-friendly process ensures that funds from legal settlement and public trust earnings – not tax dollars – are distributed strategically and responsibly to partners making a measurable local impact.” Newport’s Community Grant Programs build a stronger and more resilient community for all residents- with a key focus on organizations providing programs and services benefitting low and moderate-income residents and families.
Community Grant funding supports nonprofits advancing:
Economic and community development
Public health and well-being
Access to arts and cultural programming
Youth recreation and engagement
Senior services and inclusion
Applications and guidelines for FY27 will be available on the City’s website beginning November 13, 2025 at www.CityofNewport.com/Grants. All applications must be submitted through the online portal no later than December 5, 2025. Late submissions will not be accepted. Applicants must be recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.
All grant awards are subject to City Council approval and fund availability
