City of Newport Seeking Volunteers to Serve on Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee

Thursday, December 18, 2025

Committee is One of Multiple Ways to Get Involved with Newport 2037

NEWPORT, RI (THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2025) – The City of Newport is inviting residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to apply for the Newport Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (NCPAC), a key advisory body supporting Newport 2037, the City’s update to its Comprehensive Plan.

From guiding decisions on land use to encouraging policy changes, Newport’s Comprehensive Plan serves as the City’s primary planning document, and is foundational to establishing a shared vision of Newport’s future.

Being a part of the NCPAC is expected to be a rigorous and exciting experience for those involved, and all are welcome to apply now through January 23rd via the City’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/NCPAC.

The NCPAC will consist of approximately 20 to 25 members representing a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. Committee members will work closely with City staff and the City’s planning consultant, Interface Studio LLC, to assist with the preparation, public engagement, and community advocacy efforts associated with the Comprehensive Plan update. The committee, which will be appointed by a vote of the City Council, is designed to be separate and distinct from specialty focus groups that will be established for specific Comprehensive Plan chapters.

The advisory committee is expected to meet virtually every other month, with members also participating in various public engagement activities alongside members of the public. The anticipated term of service will extend through November 2026.

Serving on the advisory committee is one of several opportunities for the public to participate in the Newport 2037 visioning process. Additional engagement opportunities include a series of community-wide workshops and open houses; topic-specific focus groups; community surveys; an interactive online mapping portal and an in-person experience located at City Hall; and formal public hearings with both the City Council and Planning Board.

In addition to applying to serve on the NCPAC, residents are also currently being invited to complete a brief online survey and participate in an online interactive mapping exercise by visiting www.CityofNewport.com/Newport2037.

Committee Responsibilities are Expected to Include:

  • Providing insight based on lived experience and general knowledge of the Newport community
  • Reviewing drafts and materials prepared by the consultant team and proposing changes, as appropriate
  • Actively contributing to committee meetings, workshops, and other engagement activities
  • Advocating for the Comprehensive Plan within the community
  • Helping ensure that diverse voices are meaningfully included throughout the development of the plan

Applicant Qualifications Include:

  • A strong connection to the Newport community
  • Availability to participate in virtual meetings every other month through November 2026
  • Willingness to attend and engage in public outreach events for the duration of the project
Applications for the Newport Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee are available on the City’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/NCPAC, or in-person at City Hall through the Department of Planning and Development.

To learn more about the Comprehensive Plan update, including information about our recent Winter Open House, or to watch updates from the City’s consultants presented to the Planning Board and City Council, be sure to visit the Comprehensive Plan homepage at www.CityofNewport.com/Newport2037.
