Metered, Residential Permit Parking In Effect throughout Newport NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2025) – The City of Newport’s paid parking and residential permit programs are set to begin on May 1st. In addition to streamlining its Residential Parking Permit program by introducing a new online payment and application portal at newportri.cmrpay.com Newport residential parking pass holders will once again be entitled to three free hours of parking in every metered space across the City, as well as the Mary Street Parking Lot. Parking at Easton’s Beach will also be free for Newport residents throughout the summer with no need to purchase a separate parking pass.
To qualify for three free hours of street parking, residents are asked to enter their registration plate number in either the pay station or the Passport app. There will be no fee. Pay by plate parking is in effect from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. in the downtown area, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in other metered areas (check signage) May 1st through October 31st. Hourly rates are $1.50 to $2 per hour depending on the area. Please check signage. Motorists using the City’s paid parking spaces are encouraged to pay directly from their smartphone by downloading the Passport Mobile App at www.CityofNewport.com/Parking, or by searching for the Passport App on their mobile device’s app store. Once the application is downloaded, users are asked to create an account, select the zone number that is posted on nearby signage and enter the vehicle license plate number. Users can then view their parking history and extend their sessions with the tap of a button. All City pay stations accept credit cards or coins, with the minimum payment for credit cards set at one hour. As in years past, Newport residents will once again be granted three free hours of parking at the Mary Street Parking Lot, which operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week as a self-pay lot with rates of $3 per hour and $20 per day. Parking fees at the Gateway Center Parking Lot are $5 per hour, billed in 30-minute increments, with discounted weekly and monthly rates available. Meanwhile, the City’s Long Wharf Lot is expected to be closed for the duration of the summer to accommodate ongoing infrastructure upgrades to the Long Wharf Pump Station.
For those in need of parking on Lower Thames Street, public parking is also being offered on Dearborn Street through a partnership with Emanuel Church. Finally, for motorists visiting from out of town, please be aware that the City’s residential sticker parking program is also in effect through October 1st. Visitors are reminded that parking throughout the City’s residential neighborhoods may be restricted to vehicles registered with residential parking permits, or displaying a general visitor pass, or temporary residential parking permit. Beginning this year each full-time Newport resident will be entitled to three free residential parking permits, while individual non-resident property owners, along with tenants with leases of more than seven months but less than twelve months are eligible to no more than one parking permit per residential property owner or lessee. Meanwhile, properties owned by limited liability companies or trusts are permitted no more than two permits per address. Permit applications for both Resident Parking and King Park parking permits are now available entirely online at www.NewportRI.gov/Parking
Once approved, permit holders will receive a confirmation email as proof that their vehicle has a permit. Permits are tied to specific vehicle registrations and verified by Police traffic aides and electronic license plate readers. Motorists are asked to please take note of posted signage before parking. For specific questions concerning the City’s parking lots and metered parking, please contact the Transportation Supervisor at (401) 845-5712. The City of Newport is looking for applicants to serve on a recently re-established volunteer commission focused on Accessibility.
