BLIZZARD WARNING: CITY ISSUES MANDATORY PARKING BAN
Parking Restrictions in Place until Further Notice; Residents Urged to Seek Off-Street Parking
NEWPORT, R.I. (SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2026) –
The City of Newport has issued a mandatory
Parking Ban for SUNDAY, FEB. 22ND from 7 p.m. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE in anticipation of a severe winter storm and forecast blizzard conditions.
All Newport residents are being urged to remove their cars from City roadways and take advantage of
free parking at the Gateway Center, Mary Street, and Touro Street parking lots
. Residents are also encouraged to request the use of a neighbor’s driveway to secure off street parking in order to keep vehicles off the roadways.
Not only does getting cars off the street help protect them from damage, but it also allows the City’s snow plows to operate with greater safety and efficiency.
Any motor vehicles parked on the following streets one-half hours after the parking ban begins will be subject to tow:
Annandale Road, Bellevue Avenue: (Kay Street to Bowery St), Bedlow Avenue, Bliss Road, Broadway, Coggeshall Avenue, East Bowery Street, Farewell Street, Friendship Street, Gibbs Avenue, Gould Street, Kay Street, Powell Avenue, Spring Street, Summer Street, Thames Street, Third Street, Warner Street, Washington Street, Washington Square, West Marlboro Street, West Narragansett Avenue, William Street, and Van Zandt Avenue, from J.T. Connell Memorial Road East to Malbone Road.
No Parking will also be enforced in the Yachting Village for:
Ann Street; Pope Street from Spring Street to East Street;, Anthony Street; Fountain Street;
and in the Fifth Ward on
: Carroll Avenue from Morton Avenue to Ruggles, Old Fort Road, and Harrison Avenue from Carroll Avenue to Halidon Avenue
Please be advised that this is expected to be a severe winter storm with high winds; 18-24” of heavy, wet snow; and potential coastal flooding. Residents are urged to stay off the roads and prepare for potential power outages by charging their electronic devices and signing up for Emergency Alerts at
www.CityofNewport.com/Alerts.
Newport Public Schools and City Hall will be closed on Monday, and trash collection has been delayed by at least one day.
A regional Emergency Shelter will also be open at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22nd for anyone in need, with further assistance available by dialing 2-1-1.
This is expected to be a high-impact storm, with the potential for street and bridge closures. Newport’s Public Services team and first responders will be working throughout the storm and residents are asked to be stay indoors until conditions improve.
Once the storm passes, residents and business owners are reminded to shovel any sidewalks
adjacent to their property within five hours of the storm’s conclusion.
