Parking Program Changes Aims to Modernize Permit Program
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2026) – Following a first reading during the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Wednesday, March 11th, City Councilors will be meeting in a special session on Thursday, March 12th at 7 p.m. at City Hall for the sole purpose of taking up on second reading a proposal to amend the City’s Residential Parking Permit program.

If adopted, the proposal would go into effect for the upcoming parking season, which begins in May.

BLIZZARD WARNING: CITY ISSUES MANDATORY PARKING BAN

Parking Restrictions in Place until Further Notice; Residents Urged to Seek Off-Street Parking

NEWPORT, R.I. (SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2026) – The City of Newport has issued a mandatory Parking Ban for SUNDAY, FEB. 22ND from 7 p.m. UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE in anticipation of a severe winter storm and forecast blizzard conditions.

All Newport residents are being urged to remove their cars from City roadways and take advantage of free parking at the Gateway Center, Mary Street, and Touro Street parking lots. Residents are also encouraged to request the use of a neighbor’s driveway to secure off street parking in order to keep vehicles off the roadways.

Residents Urged to Seek Off-Street Parking
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2026) – Please be advised that a mandatory Parking Ban will be in effect on Saturday, Feb. 7th from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. in anticipation of Winter Storm conditions.

Newport residents are being urged to take advantage of free parking at the Gateway Center, Mary Street, and Touro Street parking lots during the storm. Residents are also encouraged to request the use of a neighbor’s driveway to secure off street parking in order to keep vehicles off the roadways.

Not only does getting your car off the street help protect it from damage, but it also allows the City’s snow plows to operate with greater safety and efficiency.

Please be advised that any motor vehicles parked on the following streets one-half hours after the parking ban begins may be subject to tow:
Annandale Road, Bellevue Avenue: (Kay Street to Bowery St), Bedlow Avenue, Bliss Road, Broadway, Coggeshall Avenue, East Bowery Street, Farewell Street, Friendship Street, Gibbs Avenue, Gould Street, Kay Street, Powell Avenue, Spring Street, Summer Street, Thames Street, Third Street, Warner Street, Washington Street, Washington Square, West Marlboro Street, West Narragansett Avenue, William Street, and Van Zandt Avenue, from J.T. Connell Memorial Road East to Malbone Road.

Once the storm passes, residents and business owners are reminded to shovel any sidewalks adjacent to their property within five hours of the storm’s conclusion.

Newport was designed to be a walkable city and keeping clear paths for pedestrians after it snows is a responsibility that all property owners share.

Please note that the above streets will be closed while work is taking place and vehicles left on the road will be subject to tow. Impacted residents are encouraged to take advantage of FREE PARKING at any of the City's public parking lots, as well as on-street metered and unmetered spaces, including downtown and Broadway. Daytime Snow Removal Continues in Anticipation for Weekend Storm

NEWPORT, RI (THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 2026) – With heavy snow earlier this week and the potential for more accumulation this weekend, the City’s Public Services team is continuing their snow removal operations with two additional neighborhood parking bans scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Residents in Newport’s Yachting Village, Fifth Ward and Kerry Hill neighborhoods will be required to move their vehicles to off-street parking as City crews continue work to recover from this week’s snowfall. Second and Third streets in the Point will also be subject to the Parking Ban.

OVERNIGHT PARKING BAN ISSUED FOR THAMES & SPRING STREETS

Daytime Snow Removal Continues

NEWPORT, RI (TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2026) – Please be advised that in order to support the City’s ongoing snow removal effort, an emergency overnight Parking Ban will be in effect for Thames and Spring Streets beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, running through 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28.

This targeted parking ban only applies to the length of Spring Street and Thames Street and is intended to allow for expedited snow removal on two of the City’s main arteries.

Residents impacted by the parking ban are encouraged to use free off-street parking at the Gateway Center, Mary Street, and Touro Street parking lots.

Please note that vehicles remaining on the following streets 30 minutes after the parking ban begins may be towed:

NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2026) – The City of Newport has issued a mandatory Parking Ban beginning at 9 A.M. ON SUNDAY, JAN. 25TH UNTIL 9 P.M. ON MONDAY, JAN. 26TH due to forecast winter weather.

Kayak Rack Lottery Application Window Opens Feb. 1st

Applications will be accepted online only Feb. 1st-28th
 
NEWPORT, RI (THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2025) – Kayakers and dinghy owners take note: The Newport Harbormaster’s Office will be accepting applications for dinghy and kayak rack spaces at the King Park and Willow Street dinghy racks beginning Sunday, Feb. 1st until Feb. 28th.

Spaces will be determined through a lottery system, with a drawing held in March at the Newport Harbormaster’s Office.

This year’s applications will be accepted online only at www.CityofNewport.com/RackLottery
